Our Industry
Agricultural production is the backbone of this rural area with industries including rice, dairy broadacre crops, livestock, timber and horticulture crops. The diversity of activities operating throughout the Shire ensures the area is a significant contributor to the agriculture and horticulture markets.
Rice production accounts for a large portion of the industry when seasonal conditions are right, and the rice grown in our area is sold domestically and internationally. Sunshine and good soil also enables the production of cereal grains right throughout the year and the region is also a significant producer of quality livestock for meat markets.
The area incorporates a large number of citrus growers and is recognised as a sizable contributor to the Australian market. The Redgum industry is also of importance, with local sawmills supplying timber to trade centres right across Australia including our very own local Redgum furniture manufacturers and craftsmen who produce world-class furniture and pieces.
Our Tourism
Complementing the rural economy is a vibrant tourism industry based on a variety of active and passive leisure activities. Just a three hour drive from Melbourne the area is interlaced with rivers, creeks and lagoons making it an ideal destination for visitors wanting a piece of relaxation.
Most tourist activity is based around our riverside settings where visitors enjoy a unique mix of activity and tranquility in one of the few Shires in Australia to boast five magnificent rivers within its borders.
Our Lifestyle
The area’s natural assets prove to be a large attraction for locals and visitors alike- where you can enjoy a game of golf, fish in one of our five rivers, walk among the mighty red gums and enjoy the never-ending sunshine. Urban areas include the townships of Barham (the largest in the shire), Moulamein , Tooleybuc, Murray Downs, Wakool and Koraleigh. A large proportion of the population live on rural properties. Barham has a local hospital and aged care facility, and Home and Community Care Services areavailable to residents right across the Shire.
