Murray region towns and cities are strategically placed along or near Australia’s main transport corridors, most populous cities and busiest economic centres.

It is no surprise that some of Australia’s largest transport companies have chosen to base their operations here. The eastern and central parts of the region are just three hours drive from Melbourne. The regional centre of Albury-Wodonga is located on the Hume Freeway, the main transport route between Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra. The western fringes of the region benefit from good connections to Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia.

Establishment of a multi-million dollar intermodal rail hub near Albury further enhances transport logistics, offering state-of-the-art connections between road and rail freight services and warehousing facilities.

The Murray region is also very well serviced by air transport with two major centres boasting two of the busiest airports in regional Australia.

Mildura Airport is Victoria’s largest and busiest regional airport, servicing more than 180,000 passengers a year. A six hour road trip to Melbourne is reduced to a flight time of 1 hour 20 minutes.

Adelaide can also be reached by a flight of less than 1 hour. Direct same day access to Sydney is also possible and attractive to nearby NSW catchments of Wentworth and Balranald Shires with their main business and administration centres in Sydney.

At the other end of the Murray region, the newly upgraded Albury airport is the second busiest airport in regional Australia, with more than 330,000 passengers passing through the airport each year. Services to Sydney are provided by Qantaslink, Regional Express and Virgin Blue Airlines. Regional Express flies daily to Melbourne and Brindabella Airlines flies to Canberra. Both Mildura and Albury also boast charter flight and flight training services, while there are many other airfields providing linkages throughout the Murray region.
