The Murray Region is home to Australia’s leading pork producer, Rivalea. Employing nearly 1,000 people throughout rural NSW and Victoria, the company’s central operations are based in Corowa.
Rivalea is a unique, highly integrated food and agricultural business that offers Australia’s largest distribution of branded, private label and commodity pork products. The company also offers export accredited processing and packaging facilities for a growing overseas market.
The ability to control all key aspects of its production system, from pig farming and stockfeed milling through to meat processing operations has contributed to its dominance in the marketplace. There are six key elements to Rivalea’s highly successful integrated business structure.
Land lease and grain growing
With a focus on responsible and sustainable land management, Rivalea leases and crops in excess of 10,000 hectares. This provides the company with greater control of its grain, silage and hay requirements, while building long-term and mutually beneficial relationships with farmers and landholders.
Grain purchasing and feed milling
Rivalea is a pioneer in developing world’s best practice in the manufacture of high quality pelleted stockfeed. With nutritional expertise spanning more than 30 years through its FeedSafeaccredited production facilities, Rivalea supplies the nutritional and feed requirements of its own integrated pork production system as well as dairy farmers, rural retailers and other feedmills.
Pig farming operations
As Australia’s leading pork producer, Rivalea has an extensive network of farms across southern NSW and central Victoria producing pigs for domestic and international markets. Full ownership of the animals ensures optimum breeding and rearing conditions and practices, overseen by a dedicated team focused on raising and caring for them. An extensive training program is provided for employees and contractors in the management, handling and welfare of pigs.
Pork processing and packaging
Rivalea owns and operates purpose built abattoirs, boning and packaging facilities at its Corowa site. The processing and packaging operations are export accredited and backed by audited and monitored food safety and quality programs.
Distribution
The delivery of Rivalea pork and brands to major cities and distribution centres is handled by wholly-owned subsidiaries and contractors. Through this network, Rivalea delivers pork to Australia’s leading retail supermarkets, restaurant and butcher shops as well as overseas, while maintaining the highest quality standards for food safety.
Products and customer service
Rivalea prides itself on being a customer focussed food company, meeting the needs of consumers by providing quality products and services. Controlling all aspects of production, processing and distribution enables Rivalea to offer a diverse range of premium pork products and brands. Investment in pork production research and innovation is also the largest in Australia. Retail brands include “Murray Valley Pork” a premium product for butchers and restaurants, “Family Chef” quality pork delivered to independent supermarkets and “High Country” a jointly owned brand of premium pork products for the food service market
