There are currently over $1.4 billion in major projects planned across the region. Projects include a wide variety of community, business, and industry and environment projects and will have many positive impacts for the economy. Key projects include;

  • Irrigation Modernisation and Infrastructure Upgrade; There are several planned major irrigation infrastructure upgrades and modernisation projects planned across the region including the Goulburn-Murray Water Connections Project, Swan Hill Irrigation Modernisation and Sunraysia Modernisation Project. These projects will improve the efficiency of the irrigation network across the region. These projects are expected to create significant benefits to industry and the broader economy through improved levels of service, greater flexibility for irrigators and more efficiency which will positively impact production productivity
  • Mildura Rail Upgrade; The Victorian Government has recently committed to the $220 million upgrade and standardisation of the Mildura rail line. Delivery of this project will improve the region’s connectivity and facilitate freight movement across Victoria, enhancing north-west Victoria’s access to the ports of Portland, Geelong and Melbourne. This is a positive outcome for the agribusiness sector in the Murray Region, providing increased opportunities for export.
  • Energy Projects; The Murray Region has a number of planned major energy projects with the most notable being the solar power project in Gannawarra Shire (valued at $820 million). There are several other major energy projects either recently completed or planned for the Murray Region and these are expected to provide significant jobs and local investment for the region.
Victoria
Campaspe Regional Library Campaspe $5.1 Construction of the Campaspe Regional Library will commence in 2014. This project represents an investment of $5.1 million. This highly valued community facility has been a long standing priority for the Council.
Port of Echuca Revitalisation Campaspe $14.2 Commenced Sep 2010. It is a joint venture incorporating funding by the Shire of Campaspe and Federal and Victorian State Governments. The $14.2 million investment will transform the iconic heritage listed Eucha Wharf into a major tourism attraction. The revitalisation of the Port is estimated to attract a further 22,000 people each year to the attraction and create significant economic benefits within the local economy (Victoria’s Food Bowl, 2014).
Swan Hill CDB Redevelopment Swan Hill TBA The third stage of Swan Hill’s CBD redevelopment will revitalise the section of Campbell Street between Rutherford and McCrae streets. It will include the installation of new shade, seating, gardens, trees and paving. It will also create extra carparking spaces. Council’s works team and local contractors started the project on 29 January, and expect to be complete in May 2014.
Swan Hill Riverfront Masterplan Swan Hill $1.6 Redevelopment of a 4.5km section of the Murray and Little Murray rivers over the next 30 years.
Tallangatta Integrated Community Centre Towong $4.8 The facility will incorporate a diverse range of new services located in the Tallangatta central business district including an eco-educational centre, modern library, community services lounge and resource centre, IT portals, kindergarten, long day care centre, maternal health and provision for Council and other business services. Construction will commence in 2014 and is part of a larger Tallangatta Tomorrow masterplanning process.
Walwa Community Recovery Centre Towong TBA The Centre is stage one of the overall proposed Walwa project and aims to support the local community, volunteers and emergency management capabilities from a centrally located, state-of-the-art facility. It will encompass a meeting space, large catering facility, disabled toilet, baby change room and an equipment store. Stage II of the project will include development of an associated sporting field and recreational areas. Works are expected to be completed in 2014.
Cudgewa Community Centre Towong $0.5 The new facility has replaced an old, inaccessible and deteriorating building which was declining in use from the local community.
Tallangatta Multi-Sport Precinct Towong $1.4 The new Tallangatta Multi-Sporting Precinct incorporates an innovative and environmentally sustainable design providing improved amenities for a wide variety of sporting activities undertaken at the Park. In particular, the Tallangatta Multi-Sport Precinct provides change rooms for football, cricket, netball and swimming club usage. The building also includes a kitchen and function room for community use and hire.
Mangorra Park Multi-Purpose Centre Towong $1.0 The new building will incorporate a new function room, new football and netball change rooms, support emergency personnel and a broad range of local volunteer activities. It will make provision for a new child care and kindergarten space, visiting medical rooms and improved access. In addition, the Centre will provide a place for people to enjoy events such as the Mitta Muster.
Mildura Riverfront Mildura $18 This project will enhance and create new connections between the Riverfront, the CBD, Arts Precinct and developing Marina, to unlock the delivery of integrated tourism, cultural and recreational programs for the proposed $222million Mildura Riverfront and Marina Project, a project of State significance.
Mildura Rail Upgrade Mildura $220 The Victoria Government recently announced the commitment of $220 million to the upgrade and standardisation of the Mildura rail line. This project will see an initial investment of $41 million for the upgrade of the Mildura to Maryborough and the Hopetoun to Murtoa rail lines. A Mildura to Geelong Standardisation business case will be finalised by the end of this year with the expected completion date for the full project being 2018. These projects will facilitate the movement of freight around the state and enhance north-western Victoria’s access to the ports of Portland, Geelong and Melbourne for export opportunities. This is a positive outcome for the agribusiness sector, including the grain industry.
Sunraysia Modernisation Project Mildura and other areas of the Murray Region $103 The Sunraysia Modernisation Project has been approved and will proceed. The Federal Government has approved $103 million for the project to bring ageing irrigation infrastructure in line with contemporary irrigation standards. The Sunraysia Modernisation Project will provide a more efficient irrigation network in the Mildura, Merbein and Red Cliffs districts, providing 365 days per year water delivery to irrigators, improved water quality and improved irrigation application rates for as many customers as possible. It will deliver strong economic outcomes through improved levels of service, greater flexibility for irrigators and a more efficient irrigation system. This will allow from maximum productivity from the region.
Swan Hill Irrigation Modernisation Project Swan Hill $27 The Swan Hill irrigation modernisation project around Swan Hill, which provide more efficient irrigation services to local farmers and benefit the community by removing 9.6km of irrigation channels from the centre of town, replacing them with walking and bike tracks.
Mildura Airport Terminal Upgrade Mildura $6.4 Upgrade of Mildura Airport Terminal to support new air services, including those connecting Adelaide, Sydney and Broken Hill to Mildura
Goulbourn-Murray Water Connections Project Various TBA G-MW Connections Project is being undertaken through two stages. The project will redevelop the Goulburn Murray irrigation system into a world-class, best practice system and help secure the future of the region’s $9 billion irrigated agricultural industries and $1.53 billion export market. The project will also enhance environmental flows and urban water supplies. The project will be completed by 2015.
Nurmurkah Hospital Upgrade Moira $18 $18 million upgrade of the Nurmurkah hospital. This project is currently in the planning phase.
Kerang Hospital Redevelopment Gannawarra $36 The $36 million upgrade of the Kerang hospital will include development of a new residential aged care building, upgrade of the acute ward in the main hospital building and a new radiology and emergency department. The facility will be completed by the end of 2015.
Solar Power Projects Gannawarra $820 Gannawarra Shire has approved plans for development of the biggest solar farm in Australia which is to be located West of Kerang and will generate 638,000 megawatts hours of clean energy each year.
Education Investments in Wodonga Wodonga $16 Major education investments in Wodonga including regeneration of the Wodonga Senior Secondary College ($10m) and modernisation of the Belvoir Wodonga Special Development School ($6m).
Fatigue Management Centre Wodonga $15.8 A Fatigue Management Centre will be developed at Wodonga – the central hub to Australia’s busiest freight route. The Centre will be developed to improve the shortage of rest areas that has existed along the route and will include the construction of a 24-hour service centre, a Fatigue Management Centre (rest area) for up to 45 trucks and a secure area for the exchange of trailers between Sydney-based and Melbourne-based drivers.
New South Wales
Novotel Albury Development Albury $30 A $30 million seven-storey hotel will be developed in the Albury CBD (Smollett Street) in 2014 (due for completion in early 2015). The hotel will be a 4.5 star hotel that will be managed by Accor Hotel Group and is estimated to create 200 jobs. The hotel will have 120 rooms and conference facilities.
Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Albury $80 The Albury-Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre will be completed in 2015. The Regional Cancer Centre will be linked to the existing Albury hospital and provide a modern design and high quality health care facilities.
Wagirra Trail Albury $2.6 The Wagirra Trail is a two-metre wide shared pathway that will link Wonga Wetlands with the South Albury Trail at the Union Bridge.
Kiewa St Roadworks Albury $1.8 Major works will commence in June on Kiewa Street, between Dean and Smollett Streets.
Airport Runway Upgrade Albury $2.6 Major works are underway on resealing the Albury Airport runway
Albury Regional Art Gallery Redevelopment Albury $10.5 The redevelopment of the Albury Regional Art Gallery is underway, with local building firm Zauner Construction undertaking the works.
Murray River Improvements Albury $5.0 Albury City is making significant improvements to Murray River frontage and access
Northern Valley Development Albury $1.6 The new Northern Valley development at the Albury Waste Management Centre will significantly reduce the amount of waste going to landfill
Revitalisation of the Sports and Community precinct in Finley Berrigan $1.7 The Finley Sports and Community Precinct project will enhance and improve the sporting facilities and the community amenity, making it more attractive to the general public, visiting teams, regional events and user groups
Tumbarumba Community Sport and Recreation Hub Tumbarumba $0.8 The sporting and community hub will facilitate greater involvement in physical activities for residents and visitors in the local area, and will enhance liveability by encouraging community participation in an inclusive environment.
